Game Reports

VALLEY SEASON ENDS IN FIRST ROUND;
MULVANE SLIPS PAST THE HORNETS 1-0

(Oct. 23-Mulvane) Valley Center (7-9-1) ended the 2001 season in the first round of state, with a 1-0 loss to Mulvane. Mulvane junior Dusti Rogers was credited with the goal, assisted by Blake Epperson, in the 29th minute of the 2nd half (69th minute of the 80 minute game).

Valley played composed with it's young squad, effectively playing their passing and controlling the ball throughout the game. Mulvane's Wildcats, including 12 seniors on its roster, played more physical and at times threw the Hornets off their game.

Juniors Dustin Meier, Tyler Beeton and sophomore Ryan Wright sliced through the Mulvane defense most of the game at will, creating several opportunities to put Valley Center on the board. Less than desireable field conditions, and a lethargic officiating crew didn't help the Hornets in the first round loss.

Seniors

SENIORS FINAL HOME GAME-- (L-R) Ryan Nutter, Casey Hatfield, Joel Ensey and Justin Truman, Hornet seniors got a 1-0 win in their final regular season home game against Rose Hill.

HORNETS WIN LAST GAME 1-0;
NEXT: 1ST ROUND OF STATE

(OCT. 16-Valley Center) The regular season for the Valley Center Hornets ended on a high note, with a 1-0 win against Rose Hill. Valley pressured Rose Hill throughout the game, controlling the midfield, and attacked the Rose Hill defense throughout the game.

Sophomore Nathan Delforge was credited with the only goal in the game. In the 12th minute of play, sophomore Brian Unruh stole a Rose Hill pass at midfield, and got the ball to junior Josh Breitigan breaking down the right side of the field. Breitigan beat the defender in the corner, and sent a low driving pass to the near post. Delforge broke through the traffic in front of the goal and banged it off 2 Rose Hill defenders before he deflected it off a 3rd into the goal.

Senior Justin Truman recorded the shutout for the Hornets.

Saturday will be the announcement for seeding for the first round of 5-1A state. Info will be posted as soon as it is available.

The south wind howled at the Goddard stadium. The corner flags stayed bent throughout the JV and varsity games.

SCORELESS DRAW AT GODDARD IN THE WIND

(Oct. 9- Goddard High) It was an extremely windy game against Chisholm Trail foe Goddard. The game ended, after 2 overtime periods 0-0. Goddard split the goalkeeper duties between senior Brett Womack and Brent Miller. Valley Center senior Justin Truman recorded his 6th shutout of the season.

Valley Center had the wind at their backs in the first half. A few shots on goal were taken on the new astroturf stadium field. The second half Goddard had the wind. Valley tightened their defense and kept the home team off the board. Junior Josh Breitigan was a one man wrecking crew to any Goddard build up. He had full control of the right side of the field, defensively and offensively, creating a number of chances for the Hornets against the south wind.

Goal Newton

NEWTON GOAL- Newton scored the go ahead goal in the JV game came in the first half of play. The goal was scored after a corner kick deep in the Hornets goal.

NEWTON DEFEAT HORNETS 3-1

(OCT 4- NEWTON HIGH) The Hornet's second game under the lights in Newton, started just in time for a blustery fall cold front. The JV had the early game a 4-1 loss, while the varsity fell 3-1 in the nightcap.

The strong chilling north wind kept play in one half of the field during both games. For the JV the Hornets got on the board first. Nathan Delforge scored with 7 minutes left in the first half. Luis Fernando sent a pass into the head wind to Delforge for the first goal of the game.

For the varsity, Patrick Kenemer scored an unassisted goal on a quickly started free kick. It was Kenemer's second goal, and second off a free kick, this season.

Brian Unruh

Brian Unruh sends a crossing ball against Nickerson. Unruh scored the game tying goal for the Hornets.

2 LATE GOALS SEAL VICTORY FOR VISITING VALLEY

(OCT. 2- Nickerson High) Tyler Beeton's free kick to wide open Bryan Sorensen may have been the play of the game. Sorensen, unmarked at the left top of the penalty area, went in untouched with just the goalkeeper to beat. He blasted a shot, that glanced off the keeper to the foot of senior Ryan Nutter. Nutter one-timed the ball to the back of the net for the game winner- Valley Center 3 Nickerson 2.

With 15 minutes left in the game, Nickerson had a 2-1 lead. Valley penetrated the Panter defense at will, stalling their attack endlessly in the penalty area. Brian Unruh tied the game on an unassisted goal. Five or six players from both Valley and Nickerson had touches on the ball before Unruh buried the ball to tie it 2-2. Josh Breitigan got the Hornets on the scoreboard first late in the first half. Beeton one-touched a pass to Ryan Wright and he one-timed the ball to Breitigan running on to the pass.

McPHERSON SCORES 3 UNANSWERED
GOALS IN 10 MINUTES FOR WIN

(Sept. 27-Valley Center) The Valley Center Hornets played 70 minutes of BRILLIANT SOCCER! Hard tackles, won every 50-50 ball, great passing, and a 1-0 lead. McPherson scored 3 goals in less than 10 minutes of play to defeat VC 3-1. McPherson, the 9th ranked team in 5-1A stole a late victory at Valley Center.

Valley struck early when freshman Patrick Kenemer stole a pass at midfield in the 12th minute of play. He sent the ball down the left side of the field to junior Tyler Beeton who was on the run. Beeton one-touched the ball and sent a pass to junior Dustin Meier, who beat his defender and got off a one-timed shot into the McPherson goalkeeper sophomore Jordan Fithian. The ball came off the 6'5" keeper and Ryan Wright buried the rebound for a 1-0 lead.

Valley kept the lead until late in the second half. A delayed call by referee Klaus Kollmai gave McPherson a direct free kick from 23 yards out. Brian Kramer curved his shot around the wall, off the goalpost in the 72nd minute to tie the game.

Three minutes later, McPherson was pressuring, and during a flurry in the penalty area, Daniel Schwindt was able to get a pass to Chris Claassen who scored McPherson's go ahead goal. In the 89th minute Dustin Meier was fouled outside the McPherson penalty area. Tyler Beeton and Patrick Kenemer set up the free kick for Valley. Beeton took the left-footed cross, that keeper Fithian snagged in the air.

Fithian blasted his punt to Kramer, who shoved a Valley defender for a one-on-one with Valley keeper Justin Truman. Kramer scored his second goal of the match 3 minuted in injury time. (Injury time is added time to the half by the referee due to stoppages throughout the half).

A MESSAGE FROM COACH EMERINE

Just wanted to let everyone know who sees this guestbook or who looks at the website, that on September 27th, Valley Center, and in particular, Justin, Joel, Travis, Casey, Tyler, Bryan U, Bryan S, Josh, Jake, Bubba, Ryan, Dustin, and Steve, took it to the 9th ranked MacPherson team in 5A of Kansas. They took it to MacPherson after previously the last 2 years the score being 9-0 and 9-0. They took it to a bigger and faster team. They took it to them for 70 minutes of an 80 minute game. They scored early and held a 1-0 advantage for 70 minutes. They gave all the heart, courage, and mental energy they had, and came up just short. But, they took it to them, and in that effort, they came away winners. Well done fellas!

Ryan Nutter against Andover Central

VALLEY DEFEAT CENTRAL 2-0

(Sept. 25-Andover, Kan.) The Valley Center Hornets defeated Andover Central 2-0 under the lights in Andover. Ryan Wright scored the Hornet's first goal 19 minutes into the game. Junior Tyler Beeton sent a corner kick to the top of the penalty area to an awaiting Wright, who one-timed the shot with pinpoint accuracy in the upper 90 (corner of the goal) past Andover Central goalkeeper Brandon Howarah for the score.

Senior Ryan Nutter scored his first goal of the season in the 62nd minute. Sophomore Brian Unruh hustled to a ball in the midfield and sent the streaking Nutter in the box with only the goalkeeper to beat. Nutter tucked the ball under Howarah for the Hornet's 2nd goal of the match.

Valley controlled the game for all 80 minutes of play taking 8 shots to A-Central's 2. Justin Truman record his 5th shutout of the season.

COLEMAN'S HATRICK SINKS VC

(Sept. 20-Valley Center) Kevin Coleman of Buhler scored 3 unassisted goals to beat Valley Center. Coleman's 3 goals, came in the 2nd half of play. Valley Center out shot Buhler 17-13. Valley head coach Kirk Emerine was unhappy with the team's inability to score in the attacking third of the field.

"We dominated them all game," Emerine said. In the first half of play, the Hornets had a stiff south wind at their backs. Valley had 8 shots to Buhler's 4 in the half. By second half, the wind died down, and Valley still got off 9 shots in the half.

Buhler's leading scorer, and the 5A Southwest leading scorer Robert Magana-Garcia was held to 1 shot in the first half.

WRIGHT AND MEIER COMBINE
AGAIN TO DEFEAT CAMPUS 1-0

(Tuesday, Sept. 18-Campus High) It's always tough to do it again. This time it was the Valley Center Hornets turn. Junior Dustin Meier scored with less than 5 minutes in regulation to defeat Campus 1-0. Meier's goal was assisted by sophomore Ryan Wright, this is Wright's and Meier's 2nd game winning combination this season. Meier is 7th in scoring in 5-1A , with 5 goals through games Sept. 16.

The Colts had defeated the Hornets in 2nd round action of the Goddard Tournament 3 weeks ago 3-1. Assistant Coach Jeremy Ensey was pleased with the team's overall play in the second meeting. "We really played well," Ensey said. "May have been the best passing all season."

Senior Justin Truman recorded the shutout. He said, "We really played like a team."

Campus had an early crack at the goal on a crossing ball into the box.

Josh Breitigan (L) and Dustin Meier head toward the ball against Mulvane.

(SEPT 13, 2001-MULVANE HIGH) A defensive misque early in the second half, and a missed penalty kick led to Mulvane's defeat of Valley Center 1-0 in Mulvane. Two Valley defenders attempted to clear a ball crossed in the penalty area. Mulvane's Ryan Phalen bolted through the area and headed the game winner to the back of the net.

Later in the second half, junior Dustin Meier was dragged down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick for the foul. Meier stepped up and his shot was wide of the goal.

Valley Center out shot Mulvane 16-13, 12 shots coming in the second half.
